Owning a car is a massive luxury in today’s day and age; and unfortunately one that many people truly do not understand. This may be more or less due to the quality of cars being manufactured, particularly with those that less expensive. More common than not, the saying “they don’t build them like they used to” is synonymous with the cars that are rolling off the production line today. Many of them come out of the factory with paint defects on paper-thin clear coat, with cheap plastic interiors, fake leather.. we could go on. This, paired with our busy schedules, day-to-day stresses, family commitments and many run-around trips can result in that new-car feeling losing its lustre fairly quickly. We can tend to lose the appreciation of having a vehicle that can reliably get you and your family from point A to B.

We all know that is doesn’t take too long to end up with a dirty car. After the kids and the dog have had their way, sometimes it can look as if a bomb has gone off. We all also know how nice it is once the mess is cleaned up and the car is a fresh slate once again. While it would be nice to have the time and energy to constantly keep on top of it, it can be nothing short of a challenge to do so. However, if your vehicle is not regularly maintained, it can suffer over time. A filthy car with no active paint sealant or wax is a recipe for swirl marks and scratches, and bug splatters or animal droppings can steadily eat into your clear coat if left untouched. Brake dust is also a corrosive substance that can gradually eat into your wheel surfaces; a phenomenon known as “wheel pitting”.

With all of this in mind, the team at O’Keefe’s Prestige Detailing understand the importance of looking after cars, and the value and longevity it retains. This is why we offer a range of professional car detailing and basic car cleaning services to help you stay on top of your vehicle. We also offer our maintenance programs that eliminates the need for you to look after it yourself, and instead letting us take care of your pride and joy with our wealth of knowledge and expertise. Our Sunshine Coast expert mobile detailing services will allow you to rest assured that your car is in more-than-capable hands, who will meticulously restore it with professional car cleaning expertise.

When is it best to have my car detailed?

The essence of car detailing is all in its name. The purpose is to get into every nook, crevice and cranny to extract as much dirt and grime as possible, leaving the car as a fresh slate again. There are different situations which may require the expertise a professional car detail offers. The car may be very dirty, past the “point of return” where professional help is necessary. This can be a common case, especially when it’s been years since the car has had a proper in-depth clean. Or, the car may be going up for sale on the market and needs to fetch as best resale value as possible. Other times the car may not necessarily be in bad condition, but just needs to be put onto a certain standard to be maintained.

In our opinion, we believe that cars should be detailed at least once every few months in order to keep them in optimal condition. This is for several reasons. Even with modern paint sealants, most will be lucky to provide anything more than a few months of protection. There are some which are capable of providing up to 6 months in ideal conditions, but it’s likely they’ll be on their way out and ready for re-application by month 5. Keeping your car’s paint sealant up-to-date means that you’re keeping your paintwork protected from the elements 24/7, greatly reducing the risk of scratches (and also maintaining that showroom shine). Detailing every few months also prevents interior grime build-up, which, when left untreated, can become a much more labour-intensive task to remove. As a personal example, I like to clean my own car every 1-2 weeks, while performing more of a detail every month or so to keep everything up to spec. That’s my personal preference, and yes, a little bit meticulous, but it keeps the car looking fantastic!

What actionable steps can I take to keep my car clean in between detailing?

There are two different kinds of people; those who get their car detailed and are happy to get it dirty until it gets its next clean, and those who want to stay on top of their car in between details. Here are some small, actionable steps you can take to ensure that your car doesn’t require an overhaul on its next detail, resulting in less money out of your pocket and a car that stays looking and smelling cleaner for longer.

  1. Shaking out the floor mats. Consistently getting rid of surface-level debris is one of the easiest ways to keep your interior’s appearance looking great. A simple vacuum alone of your car’s interior does wonders for making it look cleaner. Removing light debris, sand and grass with a simple mat shake is very much the same. An added upside is that removing surface-level dirt prevents it from getting embedded into the mats, making life easier the next time it gets a vacuum.

2. No food in the car. Old food in car interiors is one of the top contributors to unwanted odours. Try as you might, it’s almost inevitable that food crumbs will fall into the cracks and crevices, contributing to nasty smells.

Should I opt for mobile detailing or in-studio detailing?

Mobile detailing is the ultimate convenience. There’s no need for travel time, and the car can be transformed at yours, from the comfort of your home. It’s no wonder that it’s a highly popular choice for customers. Mobile detailing is a great choice for those who work from home or can’t afford the time out of their day to bring their car into a detailing studio. In fact, this is usually the number-one reason people opt for mobile detailing. It’s not without its downsides, however. Without a controlled workshop, final results are more likely to vary and may require longer time to achieve. Factors such as direct sunlight, rain, wind and other environmental elements may impact the quality of the job. No shade is usually a big one, as it generally means glass will be harder to clean, water spots are more likely to occur and chemicals can flash off and “bake” very quickly onto surfaces. Professional detailers have their methods to keep these factors under control, but it’s always worth taking into consideration when comparing mobile to in-studio detailing.

Workshop detailing allows for predictable work time and results, as well as allowing for consistent shade which provides relief from direct sunlight. With all of the tools and chemicals within easy reach, this can help speed up the detailing process. Having access to workshop staff is also incredibly helpful for ensuring consistent detailing times so that customers can have their cars back as soon as possible. No call-out fees will often mean slightly cheaper prices when it comes to in-studio detailing. The main drawback that this causes is lack of convenience for the customer, as they need to bring their car to the shop to get detailed. Some businesses have been able to help navigate this inconvenience by offering the use of hire cars while their car is out of action, allowing them to continue going about their day without major hassle. This is especially useful when it comes to cars receiving much more in-depth work, such as paint correction or paint protection, which can sometimes take the entirety of the day, or two.

Overall, both forms of detailing lead to the same results, and are tailored to the customer’s best interests. The key differences between the two revolve around client convenience and accessibility to ensure they can be served in the most ideal way. It’s ultimately up to the customer to decide for themselves if they would rather bring their car to a detailer, or have the detailer come to them, while being aware of the main differences, pros and cons of both detailing methods.
